IOLeda® conduit User Guide (v1.4)
File Data Format
Download the Conduit User Guide in "pdf" format.
The IOLeda® conduit, like other Palm® OS software conduits, controls the export and import of user data between the desktop computer and the Palm® OS PDA.
The conduit is supplied to registered users directly.
The conduit will not function with the trial version of the IOLeda® software.
A "pdf" format version of the Conduit User Guide can be downloaded.
The IOLeda® conduit controls the transfer of IOLeda® application data between the handheld device (PDA) and the desktop computer (PC).
After installing the conduit, a help file for the IOLeda® conduit is available from the hotsync® manager in the system tray on the PC (right click the hotsync® Icon in the system tray, select custom, select the correct hotsync® user, locate the IOLeda® conduit and then select "Change ...". With the IOLeda® conduit settings shown on the screen, press F1 or the "Help" button to see instructions similar to the information in this guide).
Data transfer overview:
From PDA to PC
Includes the data which has been entered on the PDA, as well as the results of calculations used in the IOLeda® results analysis, and the lens postion value that has been calculated for the case.
PC to PDA
Sends patient data from the PC (the data entered on the data entry screens), to either replace or append to the data already on the PDA.
IOLeda® Desktop PC Data associated with the conduit.
Data from the IOLeda® application can be sent to the desktop by the conduit during a hotsync® operation, and it appears on the desktop in a comma separated variable (CSV) format - use your favorite search engine and search "CSV files" - for a detailed explanation of the CSV file format.
The PC file used during a hotsync® operation to send data from the PDA to the PC is a CSV data file called "IOLeda_Out.csv", and after the hotsync® operation is run, it is located in the IOLeda® sub directory of the handheld device users directory.
Data from desktop applications (eg spreadsheets, databases) can be sent to the IOLeda® application on the PDA using the IOLeda® conduit and the "IOLeda_In.csv" file. When the conduit is set to send data to the PDA during a hotsync® the conduit looks for the "IOLeda_In.csv" file in the IOLeda® sub directory of the users directory on the PC.
The conduit either adds the desktop data to the PDA IOLeda® application data files that already exist, or replaces them.
Caution with Conduit Settings
The conduit settings control how the conduit handles the data during the hotsync® operation. See Conduit settings.
There are several files on the handheld device used by the IOLeda® application.
The files are backed up to the desktop system during a hotsync® operation, whether the IOLeda® conduit is used or not.
The data from the IOLeda® application can be sent to the desktop by the IOLeda® conduit during a hotsync® operation, and it appears on the desktop system in a comma separated variable (CSV) format. The data file on the desktop system is called "IOLeda_Out.csv", and it is located in the IOLeda® sub directory of the PDA users directory on the PC.
Data from the desktop can be sent to the handheld device by the IOLeda® conduit during a hotsync® operation. The desktop data is taken from the "IOLeda_In.csv" file, and the conduit finds this file in the IOLeda® sub directory of the handheld device user directory.
The conduit settings control how the conduit handles the data during the hotsync® operation.
To view the IOLeda® hotsync® conduit settings right click the hotsync® Icon in the system tray, select custom, select the correct hotsync® user, locate the IOLeda® conduit and then select "Change ...".
The IOLeda® hotsync® action options will be displayed.

Select from the following options:
|
Handheld Overwrites Desktop |
Copies IOLeda® data from your handheld to your computer, replacing the IOLeda_Out.csv file (if it exists) on your computer. |
|
Desktop Overwrites Handheld |
Copies IOLeda® data from your computer (IOLeda_In.csv) to your handheld, replacing any IOLeda® data on your handheld. |
|
Desktop Appends to Handheld |
Data from your computer (IOLeda_In.csv) is added to the existing IOLeda® data on your handheld. |
|
Do Nothing |
Performs no action during the hotsync® operation. However, the Palm Application files are backup up. |
Set As Default
When this check box is selected, the hotsync® action selected becomes the default for all future IOLeda® hotsync® operations. If it is not checked, the selected action applies only to the next hotsync® . See caution with conduit settings.
Select the "OK" button when finished.
To avoid inadvertent data loss, check the Conduit Settings carefully, and consider changes in the data on the handheld device since the last hotsync® operation when creating the "IOLeda_In.csv", or when it is left in the user folder after a hotsync® operation.
The fields are listed (below) in the order they are sent to the handheld device IOLeda® application, separated by commas. The actual file has no header with the field names. That is, this list is a guide to organize the data on the desktop system, but the names are not needed in the file.
There are two types of records (lines) in the file.
One record (value = "P" in the first field in the record), has a total of seven (7) fields in the record with the names as listed.
The other (value = "M" in the first field in the record), has a total of thirty five (35) fields in the record with the names as listed.
The "M" record that belongs with a particular patient must follow that patient's details (record type = "P"). There can be none, one or many "M" records for any patient.
The correspondence with the IOLeda® application data entry fields on the handheld device should be evident. It is best appreciated by examining the IOLeda_out.csv file and cross checking the entered data on the handheld device with the order and values in the file.
The IOLeda_In.csv file does not use the last fifteen (15) values that are present in the IOLeda_Out.csv file. These values are calculated to be displayed in the IOLeda® application on the handheld device, and do not need to be stored. The conduit calculates them.
Record Type (value = "P" stands for Patient details)
Record Type (value = "M" stands for Measurement details)
The fields are listed (below) in the order they are sent to the desktop file, separated by commas. The actual file has no header with the field names. That is, this list is a guide to identify the data when examining the file on the desktop system, but the names are not present in the actual file.
The conduit settings are used to control the use of the desktop and handheld device files.
There are two types of records (lines) in the file.
One record (value = "P" in the first field in the record), has a total of seven (7) fields in the record with the names as listed.
The other (value = "M" in the first field in the record), has a total of fifty (50) fields in the record with the names as listed.
The "M" record that belongs with a particular patient follows that patient's details (record type = "P"). There can be none, one or many "M" records for any patient.
The correspondence between the fields in the IOLeda_IN.csv and IOLeda_Out.csv files and with the IOLeda® application data entry fields on the handheld device should be evident. Examining the IOLeda_out.csv file and cross checking the entered data on the handheld device with the order and values in the file should prove helpful for subsequent manipulation of the data in the IOLeda_Out.csv file.
The IOLeda_In.csv file does not use the last fifteen (15) values that are present in the IOLeda_Out.csv file. These values are calculated when they need to be displayed in the IOLeda® application on the handheld device, and do not need to be stored. The conduit calculates them when the file is produced.
The meaning of the calculated values (LSE, LPE, IE) is explained in the section on the IOLeda® method of analysis.
Record Type (value = "P" stands for Patient details)
Record Type (value = "M" stands for Measurement details)
Care with conduit settings and backups are required when using the IOLeda® conduit.
It is recommended that the PDA is backed up (eg with a hotsync® operation) before first using the IOLeda® conduit. For extra safety, copy the IOLeda® application data files from the user backup folder to another folder on the system before using the conduit. When using options that change data on either the PDA or the desktop, it is advised that backups be made and copied BEFORE changing the conduit settings to minimise the risk of data loss, particularly until the user is confident with the actions performed by the conduit.
Be particularly careful about setting the two "overwrites" actions as defaults. In the case of the "desktop overwrites handheld" option, data will be lost from the handheld (replaced by the "IOLeda_In.csv" file data, if it still exists) if data on the handheld has been changed since the last hotsync® operation. It is therefore preferable to move or delete the "IOLeda_in.csv" file on the desktop system immediately after a successful hotsync® operation, so new data on the PDA will not be inadvertently overwritten at the next hotsync® by an "old" "IOLeda_In.csv" file .
When the IOLeda® conduit is first installed, the default option for operation of the conduit is to append "IOLeda_In.csv" data to the IOLeda® application database files on the handheld device. If there is no "IOLeda_In.csv" file then the IOLeda® conduit does not change any files or exchange any data, ie nothing happens, although the application database files are backed up as normal by the hotsync® manager, which happens independent of the operation of the IOLeda® conduit. No "IOLeda_Out.csv" file is created.
If an "IOLeda_In.csv" file exits in the correct directory / folder of the desktop system, the "Desktop appended to handheld device" option can cause the application database records to expand with each hotsync® operation, and although they are merely duplicated, could cause confusion after updating records on either platform.
The "Do Nothing" option will not cause any IOLeda® related data (on the PDA or the desktop) to change at all, except that the application files are backed up.
